Architectural Drafting and Design

Review

"I absolutely loved this book. Once I started reading this book, it was hard to put it down. It was much like a well loved novel. The proposed organization of this book was great. It is well written. The information in the charts and illustrations fit each topic. Many of the chapters were short in length which made it easier to offer one a chance to absorb the subject better…. There is enough information in this book that several syllabuses can be made up for several semesters."

"This book provides a very comprehensive outlook into residential architectural design and drafting. It discusses all aspects of architectural design."

"The information contained on all plan areas is great. My students learn very much from this text. It is very self explanatory, easy to read and comprehend. Illustrations shown throughout the text help students understand what is being taught."

A History of Interior Design

Review

"Pile delivers a focused and clearly written chronological examination of significant interiors and their associated details." (APT Bulletin, June 2002) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

The first edition of this major survey on interior design by John Pile won the 2001 ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) Educational Foundation/Joel Polsky Prize. Now this standard history has been updated to reflect greater coverage of non-Western design, as well as vernacular and residential interiors. A deeper exploration of sustainable design and a CD-ROM with an interactive presentation of periods and styles makes this the most relevant text available. Includes more than 500 photographs and drawings in color and black and white.

From the Inside Flap

Now in its third edition and fully updated with the most recent examples, A History of Interior Design tells the story of 6,000 years of domestic and public space.

John Pile acknowledges that interior design is a field with unclear boundaries, in which construction, architecture, furniture, decoration, techno9logy, and product design all overlap. These topics are woven together in a fascinating narrative that runs from cave dwellings and temple architecture, through Gothic cathedrals and renaissance palaces, to the grand civic spaces of the nineteenth century and the sleek interiors of modern skyscrapers.

Embedded in a social and political context, detailed discussions of famous buildings, from the Parthenon to the Pompidou Centre, are interspersed with investigations of the domestic vernacular - the cottages, farmhouses, apartments, and city terraces inhabited by ordinary people.

In this new edition, the evolution of interior design has been made even more accessible through the inclusion of a CD-ROM with an interactive timeline. Incorporating over 100 illustrations, this sets the great interior spaces of the world in the context of the social, political, and technological developments of the time.

Includes a CD-ROM with over 100 illustrations providing an interactive timeline of the history of interior design

Expanded and enriched with many more examples of landmark contemporary interiors. With 666 illustrations, 312 in colour.

About the Author

John Pile was Professor of Design at the renowned Pratt Institute, Brooklyn for most of his teaching career. He is the author of twelve books on furniture, colour, draughtsmanship, office planning, and other aspects of interior design.
